What’s the first thing you think of when we say “garage?” Do cars come to mind, or how about clutter? For most of us, our garages don’t do much more than serve as storage, but when it comes time to sell your home, they should do so much more. In fact, stage it correctly, and your garage can become an attractive selling point to many buyers. Let’s look at five ways you can convert your garage into a centerpiece.
Clear Up All the Clutter
Before you can convert your garage into an attractive selling point, you’ll need to clear up all the clutter. Start by removing any miscellaneous objects you no longer need. Most people have a bad habit of hoarding old stuff, so this should be a productive exercise.
Once you’ve cleared up all the larger items, make sure to sweep and buffer out any blemishes on the walls and floor. Keep an eye out for loose items and store them somewhere safe. The last thing you want is for someone to walk in on a chaotic room.
Install Some Extra Storage
Installing extra storage will do one of two things. For starters, it’ll make organizing a whole lot easier. You won’t have to worry about loose items popping up during your open house. Second, if potential buyers are worried about a lack of space, it’ll help put their mind at ease. Free standing shelves are easy enough to install, but consider the following as well:
- Overhead storage: works great for smaller spaces, getting everything off the floor
- Pegboards: easy to install on the walls, provides you a place to put your tools
- Hooks: perfect for suspending a bike or other items on the wall or ceiling
- Filing cabinet: a stylish choice for your garage, allows you to store all sorts of things
Build a Workbench
Believe it or not, but a workbench will work wonders when you’re trying to attract buyers. Not only will it spiff up your space, but it will provide an awesome spot to do handy work or other hobbies. Many people are looking for a place like this in their homes, so don’t be so surprised when you get excited comments about it.
Two Words: Curb Appeal
Curb appeal plays a huge part when you’re trying to attract buyers. If your garage door and driveway are gross and grimy, you’re selling your home short. Power wash the driveway and paint the doors if need be. If there’s a side entrance to your home, consider replacing it if it’s looking rough. Finally, fill in any cracks in the driveway and remove the weeds.
Clean Your Car
This may sound silly, but if you’re planning on keeping your car parked in the garage – make sure it’s clean. As much fun as you might have had this weekend driving off-road in the woods, no one else needs to see that.
Turning your garage into an attractive selling point doesn’t need to be difficult. In fact, all you need is an afternoon or two to transform it into a key centrepiece.
